JOB DESCRIPTION

An LGV Driver, commonly referred to as a Large Goods Vehicle Driver, is responsible for operating heavy goods vehicles for the transportation of goods or materials. This role involves driving large vehicles, complying with traffic regulations, and ensuring the safe and timely delivery of cargo.

QUALIFICATIONS

No formal academic entry qualifications are required. The LGV test incorporates a medical examination, theory test and assessed road driving. LGV drivers of vehicles of 3.5 tonnes and over require a Driver CPC (Certificate of Professional Competence). The minimum age for LGV driving after obtaining the qualification is 18 years. NVQs/SVQs, other vocational courses and apprenticeships relevant to this occupation are available at various levels.

TASKS

  • Drive large goods vehicles, including lorries or trucks, in compliance with traffic laws and safety regulations..
  • Operate vehicles of varying sizes based on licensing categories..
  • Transport goods and materials over designated routes, ensuring secure fastening and adherence to safety standards..
  • Load and unload cargo, utilizing appropriate equipment or assistance..
  • Plan and follow designated routes for efficient and timely delivery..
  • Utilize navigation systems or maps to navigate unfamiliar locations..
  • Assist with loading and unloading goods, ensuring proper distribution and balancing of weight..
  • Use equipment such as tail lifts, pallet jacks, or forklifts as needed..
  • Maintain accurate records of driving hours, distances travelled, and cargo details..
  • Complete required paperwork and reports in compliance with regulatory requirements..
  • Adhere to strict safety guidelines for LGV operation, including vehicle maintenance and adherence to speed limits..
  • Conduct pre-trip and post-trip inspections of the vehicle..
  • Interact with customers or warehouse personnel professionally and courteously..
  • Address delivery-related inquiries or issues..
  • Communicate effectively with dispatch, customers, or warehouse personnel..
  • Relay information regarding delays, route changes, or other relevant details..
  • Perform routine maintenance checks on the LGV, such as checking fluid levels and tire pressure..
  • Report any mechanical issues for timely repairs..
  • Stay updated on industry regulations, traffic laws, and safety protocols..
  • Participate in training sessions to enhance driving skills and knowledge..
